What is a CURA?

The Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) program is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) initiative. It aims to support the creation of alliances between community organizations (community agencies, organizations non-governmental organizations (NGOS), municipalities, etc.) and postsecondary institutions. These alliances, thanks to a process which focuses on continued collaboration and mutual learning, promotes the development of innovative research, the training of competent professionals and the production of new knowledge that benefits social, cultural and economic development of Canadian communities. This type of funding allows the coordination and support of planning research activities which meet the needs of partners. These activities are negotiated and focused on topics of mutual relevance.



Coastal Communities Challenges - CURA in the Estuary and Gulf of St.Lawrence facing climatic change

The Community-University Research Alliances (CURA) on Coastal Communities Challenges in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence facing climate change (CCC-CURA) comprises a group of partners and researchers concerned with environmental issues in Canada. This alliance project receives financial support from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and extends over a period of five years.

Management is assumed by Professor Steve Plante, Université du Quebec à Rimouski (UQAR) and by Antoine Verville Assistant General Manager of the ROBVQ (Regroupement des organismes de bassins versants du Québec). This dual direction by a university member and a member of the community ensures the work to be undertaken has a strong territorial foothold.

The Coastal Communities Challenges-CURA (CCC-CURA) includes nine community partners (non-profit organizations), nine universities and two Study Centers together representing more than 22 co-researchers and collaborators. The participants of this CURA come from Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. A governance structure has been established in order to coordinate the scientific and knowledge transfers activities to the communities.

Our project makes it possible to create, consolidate and expand alliances between our partners and the academics by a process centered on participatory-action research which promotes collaboration and mutual learning of scientific and local knowledge between all those involved.

Our project's formula consists of the co-production and co-construction of knowledge, skills and methods of transfer that will stimulate the emergence of innovative steps supporting the reinforcement of communities' capacities for negotiation in decision making and in the development of climate change adaptation strategies. The comings and goings between practice and theory encourage the development of original teaching and transfer approaches thereby encouraging students as well as partners invested in the project. The students and professionals trained in our CURA will develop skills necessary to approach environmental issues with coastal communities at the time of climate changes and thus, play a determining role in the reinforcement of their resiliency.
